HP Photosmart 1200
I expect much of the graphical input to Snowdune will come from photography. However I feel that it will be an interesting addition to be able to capture the scrawls, ragged notes, postcards, maps and other pieces of paper that make up part of the travelling experience. I've been looking at suitably portable scanners. About the size of a paperback book, HP's Photosmart 1200 looks like it could do just the job. It doesn't need a PC to capture images and it can store them on compact flash cards just like the digital cameras.

Update: Since getting the EOS 10D, I've become rather concerned at the weight of the kit I'm proposing to take with me. I've tested out the 10D's closeup capabilities and the results are more than acceptable. As a result I've decided to strike the scanner from the shopping list.
