tarting with the breathtaking cover photograph of a Dalmatian pelican this book goes on to present a stunning selection from this year's competition. It is both humbling and inspirational to leaf through them.

Gerhard Schulz's winning photograph of a gorilla and boy is interesting but is certainly not my favourite. I would seem to agree with the book's editor - Helmut Moik's Dalmatian pelican is the one photo that lodges absolutely in the mind.

Each photograph is accompanied with a brief account of how the photograph was taken and the kit used. These frequently help you understand the dedication required to take many of these photographs.
