Here's the technology that makes Snowdune possible. See our Gear section for a more general discussion on travel gear.

Canon EOS 10D

Canon's digital SLR is living up to all the reviews. 3072×2048 resolution. 1Gb capacity with an IBM Microdrive. I've added Canon's EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 and 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM image stabilised lenses. These combinations are inevitably quite sizeable and heavy, but I am hoping that their quality will be reflected in Snowdune's forthcoming photographic library.

Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG Lens

Given the EOS 10D 1.6x focal length multiplier you need to go very wide in order to get a reasonable wide angle. The 15mm end is equivalent to 24mm once the Sigma is attached to the 10D. This extreme width comes at the price of a propensity for flare. This lens is probably too heavy to accompany us round the world.

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

This lens is simply stunning. It covers a highly practical focal range. The image stabiliser works a treat, enabling much slower hand held shutter speeds to be used. The x1.6 magnification factor of attaching it to the 10D makes it effectively a 45-205mm lens. The Sigma 15-30mm covers the need for more width when it comes to landscape and architectural photography.

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

Although this zoom also features Canon's image stabilitsation technology, it is nowhere near as good a lens as the 28-135mm. The IS works fine but the auto-focus definitely has a tendency to hunt in poor light. On the plus side, it's compact and light considering its capabilities. One day I'll be able to afford L lenses...

teleconverter.jpg

Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 Teleconverter

Adding this teleconverter to the 75-300mm increases the optical focal length to 420mm (672mm when on 10D) with the loss of only 1 stop of light. Auto focus is fully retained.

Nokia 6600

Nokia 6600

For those situations where it's difficult to take a conventional camera, the Nokia 6600 phone packs a basic 640×480 resolution camera. The quality is not suitable for the Gallery but meets the requirements for thumbnails and article illustrations.

Ixus

Digital Ixus

Canon's Digital Ixus series are great travel cameras. Despite it's exceptionally compact size, it takes excellent photos. The neat photostitching feature makes wraparound panoramas a doddle.

Lomo AC

The classic Russian-made LOMO AC. The complete antithesis of the EOS 10D. A fantastic retro feel and extraordinary ability to fill photos with character. Always with me!

Gallery

Gallery is an excellent photo management and presentation system that provides a wealth of features for remotely managing the Snowdune photographic archives.

Adobe

Studio MX

Snowdune's graphical and layout designs are handled by Macromedia's Studio MX, notably its Dreamweaver and Fireworks components. I've used each generation of these products and the latest versions are particularly impressive.

Adobe

Adobe Photoshop

Nothing quite matches Photoshop's capabilities when it comes to editing and manipulating photos. Most of the photos on Snowdune receive a modest amount of post processing in Photoshop 8 CS. The latest version's ability to work directly with RAW files greatly helps with workflow.
